October: Big Celebrations at ICS!

Fran Carroll, Interim Executive Director

I am counting down the days to until United Nations Day on October 28! Why am I so excited to celebrate this special day? The UN is an international organization founded in 1945. It is described as “One place where the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems and find shared solutions.” What a beautiful vision!

At International Community School, students from the world’s nations gather together to address common problems and find solutions together. This collaborative ingenuity is represented in our commitment to “Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges.” We welcome and celebrate the differences that make our community special. In fact, one of our Statements of Understanding is: “We welcome and engage with people of various identity differences including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, faith and political affiliation.”

This year, we are honored to celebrate 20 years as the International Community School. You may have already noticed our logo looks a little different this year! Emerald is a traditional representation of 20th anniversaries, so our logo is temporarily green to represent this important milestone. You can even get your own school spirit wear with this limited edition logo!

The uniqueness of our school community offers our students a deeper understanding of their global context. One of the fun ways we highlight and celebrate these differences is by participating in UN Day. It’s a special opportunity for our students, families, and staff to showcase their traditional clothing, share favorite foods from their culture, and fellowship around the common theme of unity. With 450 children speaking 40 languages and representing 60 countries (and counting!), it will be a beautiful gathering! That’s why I’m counting down and getting excited to celebrate all the ways our international community is making strides towards those ideals set out by the UN. Will you mark your calendars to join us? I look forward to seeing you there!

Best,

Fran Carroll
