So many highlights during Back-to-School Night! A big turn out from our parents, welcome and introduction by our new principal, Ms. Allen, the mayor of Clarkston, Ted Terry, visited and spoke… and many more. Keep reading for pictures and details.

As families were coming in, they were taking their children to childcare, mingling in the cafeteria, and buying ICS t-shirts from IPTSO’s parent volunteers.  At 5:00 pm, Ms. Allen opened the meeting with an introduction and welcome, followed by an overview of these first few weeks at school. She explained how all classrooms start their day setting up the tone for learning and community with a Morning Meeting. She followed with the mention of the school-wide expectations that were explained and modeled at a student assembly, as well as the efforts of ICS staff to welcome and mentor teachers who are new to our community. The principal closed stressing the importance of supporting the school that they chose for their students by attending meetings and events, staying communicated, and joining IPTSO, the school’s Parent Organization.

Principal Allen then introduced Mr. Darvis White, our Operations Manager. He covered topics such as transportation, after-school activities, lunch, and communications.

ICS is a Title I school and Ms. Jennifer Steinord, our Assistant Principal, covered general information about Title I, it’s purpose and goals. She also mentioned the importance of the parent involvement in creating and implementing these goals, which are specified in the School-Parent Compact letter that would be distributed later in the evening.

This part of the meeting closed with a very special guest. Ted Terry, mayor of Clarkston, returned to our school, this time to share with our parents about how special he thinks ICS is for representing a true and diverse demographic, and doing it with harmony and success. He invited everyone, especially those living in the City of Clarkston, to share their concerns with the city at any time, being that the first step to finding solutions. After encouraging kids to work hard, and listen to adults, Mr. Terry closed with expressing interest to coming back and finding ways for the City of Clarkston to partner with ICS with the success of the students in mind.

For the second part of the evening, parents went to sessions in the classrooms, where homeroom teachers had information about curriculum, and ways in which they can support their child’s education, both at home and school. Parents also had the opportunity to meet single-subject teachers: French, Spanish, ESOL, Art, Music, PE, EIP and Special Education services.
