This year, the annual theme of ICS was Charting New Territory. Fran Carroll, Executive Director, reflects on what a journey this year has been for ICS and looks forward to what the next year of Reaching New Heights will bring.

From Charting New Territory to Reaching New Heights

This was the year we decided to stop asking “what if?” and start building the future we believe in. As the 2024-25 school year comes to a close, I’m reflecting on how much we’ve accomplished by turning our boldest dreams into reality. It turns out Charting New Territory is not just about navigating the unknown; it’s about having the courage to imagine a future that’s bigger than the one we know and taking the steps to make it happen.

And we did just that.

  • Launched our Community School model, which is already strengthening wraparound support for students and their families
  • Opened a new STEM Lab in partnership with Vibha, igniting curiosity and hands-on learning
  • Unveiled a new vision statement, guiding us as we move forward
  • Released our strategic plan, which is actively shaping our direction
  • Earned state recognition for our gains in literacy and received Title I Distinguished School honors
  • Received a transformational gift from the Plummer Foundation to further the work of the Community School

Navigating a Shifting Landscape

In the midst of this momentum, we’re also navigating a shifting national landscape. Changes in education policy—particularly around diversity, equity, accessibility, and student protections—have created uncertainty and anxiety for many in our community. Executive orders and funding concerns at the federal level have only added to this tension.

But in the face of that, we remain steadfast. At ICS, we will continue to show up for our students and families with integrity, joy, and commitment. The work doesn’t stop. The mission doesn’t change.

Looking Ahead: Reaching New Heights

Looking ahead, we’re not just charting new territory. We’re reaching new heights!

Next school year, we will move into the implementation phase of our strategic plan, and our focus will shift toward action. We’re preparing to serve 600 students annually in the future, with the goal of expanding to include both pre-K and middle school offerings. This will require thoughtful planning as well as smart infrastructure.

Our potential new homesite will place us even closer to the community we serve, allowing us to become an even more integrated part of that community. We know this transition will be complex. Growth always is. But with your support, we believe we can do something extraordinary.

Personally, I see the coming year as a time for even deeper community engagement. We will be reaching new audiences, forming new partnerships, and inviting others to join us in this exciting season of growth. Because if we’re truly going to reach new heights, we can’t do it alone. We need each other—our families, our staff, our neighbors, and our supporters—to keep building what’s possible.

We’ll be sharing more in the months ahead about the new homesite, our plans, and how you can help us reach new heights. For now, I hope you’ll take time to rest, travel, and enjoy your loved ones this summer.

Recharge and get ready—this transformational journey is full of possibility.
