A Great Giving Tuesday 2019

December 12, 2019 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

Thank you to all those who donated and helped us spread the word for the GaGives/Giving Tuesday campaign. The initial figure shows that we raised $15,000!

In the school’s newsletter that week, Ms. Allen thanked Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry for his support to our school and, stated that the generous donations would be appropriated to grow the school’s academic programs and grow our development efforts.

The day started with a streamed Pep Rally where the students and staff invited the public to give during this special day. Throughout the morning and afternoon, several people shared why they love and people should support our special school. Bellow are their short comments.

Walking For Peace: The Shoe Project

November 5, 2019 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

In preparation for UN Day 2019, ICS students have been creatively preparing for the temporary art installation, Walking for Peace, The Shoe Project. Gandhi once said, “If you want real peace in the world, start with the children”. And so that is what we did, we started with the children. Thank you to Ms. Mary Romano, our art teacher, for this idea and for leading the students through this work.

Many of our ICS families have walked far to get to a place of peace. In honor of the individual journey each family has taken to get to the places where they are now, the Art Studio chose shoes as the symbolic representation of these journeys.

In the literal act of painting and designing sprang forth the oral journey stories that spoke of bravery and sorrow. Here are some examples:

5th grade- “My parents had to leave the Congo because of the war. My dad died and we came here with my mom”.

4th grade- “I was in my mom’s tummy when she left central Africa because of the war. She traveled to Cameroon, then to America. I chose these little shoes because they remind me of me being little inside of her tummy.

3rd grade- “My grandmother died in Somalia in the war, so we came to America”.

2nd grade- “My parents are from Nepal, but we had to come here because it was not safe”.

The world journey is also a metaphor for life, the journey of life. The shoes in this temporary art exhibit may be small, but they represent big, courageous lives of people who walked far for peace.

U.N. Day 2019

October 5, 2019 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

International mindedness is innate in our school. We understand and appreciate one another, we are curious about the world, and about other cultures and beliefs. We see it and we feel it every day: the school explores and celebrates cultural differences in a nurturing and intentionally multi-ethnic educational environment.
Once a year we make this a big statement and celebration. We organize United Nations Day (U.N. Day) because it is important for ICS to celebrate OUR global community through sharing our heritage. The children’s heritage comes from their ancestors, so bringing in the families, and making them very much a part of this celebration is vital.

You can’t miss our annual celebration on Friday, November 1st, 2019.

(Rain date, November 8th)

The festivities start with “Parade of Nations” at 9:30 am, be sure to arrive by 9:15 am. The children parade proudly showcasing their family’s traditional clothing and the flag of the country they are representing: From the United States of America to countries in different corners of 5 continents in our world. (Students should come to school at the regular time and be dressed in their traditional clothing (or wearing colors of the flag) when they arrive.

After the parade, we will have our “Celebration of Nations” program outside on the playground, where our students will entertain us with presentations,  songs and dances.

Around 12:00 pm, we will have a “Potluck Luncheon.” What better way to show internationalism than through food and fellowship. We are asking parents to bring a traditional dish from their family/country. Each dish should provide a sample portion for 20-25 people per each grade level your children attend. Keep in mind that the school has no opportunity to heat or refrigerate dishes, so plan accordingly.

Once the meal is concluded, students should depart with their parents. There will be no After School Program. Students who will take the bus home will leave at 2:00 pm from school.

Plan ahead:

Follow the weather forecast closer to the date and plan accordingly, since most of the celebration will take place outside.

* Parking available at Medlock Park and adjacent streets. Please be sure not to block neighborhood driveways or other vehicles.
