The nation feels intensely divided, but the students, staff and families at ICS will celebrate diversity and unity this Friday at 10a.m.DECATUR, GA — As the nation wrestles with political division and discord surrounding the 2020 election, International Community School (ICS) will focus on the strength of diversity and unity during our Virtual UN Day celebration. This year’s UN Day will take place on Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, at 10 a.m. Join us virtually: https://icsgeorgia-org.zoom.us/j/83792343214

Traditionally, ICS hosts an annual UN Day filled with a Parade of Nations where students and staff dress up in clothing from their native countries, often representing over 30 countries. Students then have a chance to perform songs in English, French, and Spanish, the languages taught at ICS. Students also perform dances from their home cultures. Last year, Indian, African, African-American step, and Kashmiri dances were featured. The day closes with an international potluck sponsored by the ICS families for the entire community.

This year, though schools are fully virtual due to COVID-19, ICS plans to take a trip down memory lane and share footage and memories from past UN days. Students and staff will also present dances and songs from their countries virtually, and everyone is encouraged to wear clothes from their native countries, or a county of a friend, to celebrate this beautiful day.

Through this celebration, ICS plans to show the beauty and the strength in diversity within our school community. We want to assure ICS students, families, and staff members, who are feeling concerned and anxious during a time of intense polarization, as well as grappling with challenges due to a global pandemic, that we will get through this tough time together as a Beloved Community.
