“I liked reading books for Read to Feed because we helped people who needed money most. Read to Feed was fun. I felt like I helped a family by just reading. I learned a lot.”              – San San

This year Ms. Sherry 5th grade class participated in Heifer International’s Read to Feed Program. The students gathered sponsors and read 50 or more books in a three month period. The sponsors were able to choose how they would sponsor their student. Some sponsored according to the number of books the student read, while others chose the number of pages or chapters read. The students collected their money from their sponsors raising $191.00. With the money, the students were able to buy animals for families in other countries. They chose honey bees, geese, baby chicks, and a sheep. All of the animals can be used to make money for the family and provide food for them.

These are other reflections from the students:

“I liked reading for Read to Feed because we gave people animals that provided them with food. I felt good giving other people a gift of an animal. I think the people will cherish the animals that we gave them.”                     -Siomara

“While we did this project we got an understanding of the way other people work and their life style. It was really fun to read, earn money, and then buy the things. I feel like we got to learn a lot of new things and it was an awesome experience for us all. I am happy that I got to help someone around the world by just reading books!”                      -Anshu

“I feel like Read to Feed is a good thing to do when kids are able to help other kids that are in need of resources. I really enjoy reading and being able to help people in the process really made me feel good.”                   – Maryam

“When we were choosing the animals to buy it made me feel good to know that I was helping a family in need of food and resources. I really enjoyed this project.”                -Kiana
