Back-To-School Night & Title I Meeting

August 26, 2018 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

So many highlights during Back-to-School Night! A big turn out from our parents, welcome and introduction by our new principal, Ms. Allen, the mayor of Clarkston, Ted Terry, visited and spoke… and many more. Keep reading for pictures and details.

As families were coming in, they were taking their children to childcare, mingling in the cafeteria, and buying ICS t-shirts from IPTSO’s parent volunteers.  At 5:00 pm, Ms. Allen opened the meeting with an introduction and welcome, followed by an overview of these first few weeks at school. She explained how all classrooms start their day setting up the tone for learning and community with a Morning Meeting. She followed with the mention of the school-wide expectations that were explained and modeled at a student assembly, as well as the efforts of ICS staff to welcome and mentor teachers who are new to our community. The principal closed stressing the importance of supporting the school that they chose for their students by attending meetings and events, staying communicated, and joining IPTSO, the school’s Parent Organization.

Principal Allen then introduced Mr. Darvis White, our Operations Manager. He covered topics such as transportation, after-school activities, lunch, and communications.

ICS is a Title I school and Ms. Jennifer Steinord, our Assistant Principal, covered general information about Title I, it’s purpose and goals. She also mentioned the importance of the parent involvement in creating and implementing these goals, which are specified in the School-Parent Compact letter that would be distributed later in the evening.

This part of the meeting closed with a very special guest. Ted Terry, mayor of Clarkston, returned to our school, this time to share with our parents about how special he thinks ICS is for representing a true and diverse demographic, and doing it with harmony and success. He invited everyone, especially those living in the City of Clarkston, to share their concerns with the city at any time, being that the first step to finding solutions. After encouraging kids to work hard, and listen to adults, Mr. Terry closed with expressing interest to coming back and finding ways for the City of Clarkston to partner with ICS with the success of the students in mind.

For the second part of the evening, parents went to sessions in the classrooms, where homeroom teachers had information about curriculum, and ways in which they can support their child’s education, both at home and school. Parents also had the opportunity to meet single-subject teachers: French, Spanish, ESOL, Art, Music, PE, EIP and Special Education services.

If you we not able to attend, please let your child’s teacher or the school’s office know if you have questions or did not receive important documents given out. You can also send an email to [email protected] for further questions.

Support ICS in the Renewal of our Charter

August 11, 2018 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

The Charter of our school is up for renewal soon, and it is important that we show DeKalb County how special our school is. We need our Charter renewed so we can stay open for many years to come.
We want ICS to be present at the DeKalb County School’s Board meetings for the coming four months. You can show your support by:
– Coming to the meetings so we have a large group present, and show a strong statement of support. (Wear your ICS t-shirt, if you have one). Adults and children welcome. Let’s make it a reunion: come say “hello”.
– Share your story. We all are or have been at ICS for a reason, and they need to hear it. Contact Ms. Claudia if you would consider being a speaker. It’s a short statement, up to 3 minutes.

The remaining meetings will be September 10, October 8, November 5.
5:45 pm – 6:45 pm at the DCSD Administrative Complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain.

We hope to see you there!

August 11, 2018 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

ICS is a Title I school, and as the parent/guardian of a child attending a Title I school you are an important part of the Title I team. Your input is vital in the planning and implementation of the parent and family engagement program and activities in our school.

The focus of all Title I programs is to help eligible students meet the same high academic achievement standards expected of all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status and background.

Please complete a confidential survey that will be used to assist us with future planning for parent and family engagement activities and events at our school.

Meet Our New Principal, Ms. Allen

July 22, 2018 By Claudia Rule Leave a Comment

“Ms. Allen really understands how diverse our school is and likes it very much. I think she is going to really understand our mission at ICS to make more diversity into our hearts”, a recent ICS graduate said after the candidates met the community a few weeks ago.

We are excited to welcome Ms. Allen as the Principal of our ICS family. Here is a message she wrote:

It is with great pride and excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the newly appointed Principal of the International Community School.  I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich history and deep values. I have taught a range of students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade, and I have served in a variety of roles in public schools, charter schools, and an educational non-profit organization.  My most recent administrative experience was in Atlanta Public Schools where I served as an Assistant Principal in an IB elementary school. I’m excited and eager to bring my skills as an educational leader to ICS and work with you as a partner in education to ensure every child’s success. Along with the teachers and staff, I will work hard to continue to build up the Beloved Community while ensuring our students are set up for success in a 21st century world.

It is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors feels welcome and valued at ICS. This trust and collaboration will enable us to meet any challenges we face in a positive, solutions-oriented way.  In this spirit of partnership, I invite you to attend one of these events to meet me before the school year starts:

  •  Thursday, July 26 from 6:00-7: 00 pm. Join me for a meet-and-greet at ICS.
  • Wednesday, August 1 from 11:30-12: 30 pm. Join our entire staff at Milam Park in Clarkston to enjoy informal conversation and fun!

There will also be additional monthly opportunities to meet with me as the year kicks off. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have ideas, questions, or concerns that you would like to discuss.

Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me to ICS so far. I anticipate a fantastic year, and I cannot wait to welcome our staff and students back very soon!
Ms. Allen

Some other comments that ICS families and staff wrote about Ms. Allen after her recent community presentation include:

“She makes me most excited about ICS’ future. . . I believe she has the passion and unique knowledge and understanding of the community she is walking into. . . I think that Julie can tell the story of ICS to potential donors very effectively. . . [Her] familiarity with IB and refugee students is a plus.  I think she seems to have the kind of passion and drive this community needs, and I believe she could be a unifier . . . She comes with a wealth of educational experience . . . and values relationships. . . I love her vision of school discipline. I think her positive, upbeat personality would be inspiring.”

Please help us welcome Ms. Allen and make her feel part of our family.

ICS on “The 74” news

As Immigration Issues Roil the Nation, One Georgia Community and School Welcomes Refugees

ICS had the pleasure to have Conor Williams, New America education policy writer, visit our school a few months ago. He was interested in learning about our community and our educational model, especially for students who English is not their first language.

He now writes an article about immigration and integration. Mr. Williams provides a national and regional perspective. He highlights the Clarkston community and mentions Refuge Coffee and ICS for their core values and mission.

“Integration is central to ICS’s model — and its reality.”, writes Williams. “(At ICS) We value multiple perspectives, we value what each of our kids brings, because we have kids from over 30 countries.”, our Principal Mr. Velde-Cabrera says in an interview.

You can read the complete article HERE.

The 74 is a nonprofit news website focusing on education issues in the United States. Conor P. Williams is a senior researcher in New America’s Education Policy Program and founder of its Dual Language Learners National Work Group.

U.N. Day 2018

The school’s annual United Nations day continues to be the best and biggest celebration at ICS. We intentionally value diversity and on this day we showcase it. In spite of the weather forcing us to hold the Parade of the Nations and the performances indoors, it was still a special occasion. Here are some articles and pictures […]
