ICS is excited and honored to partner with the Center for Collaborative and International Arts at Georgia State University to welcome the 11-member Jamaican Maroon performing arts ensemble, the Granny Nanny Cultural Group, to our school this week. Thank you to parent Dr. Harcourt Fuller for making this possible.

The Maroons are descendants of former slaves who resisted enslavement and created independent communities in Jamaica’s mountains over 300 years ago.

The group was formed in the 1990s and takes its name from Queen Nanny or Granny Nanny, their 18th century leader who is Jamaica’s only female National Hero to date. The group’s oral traditions, music, dances and songs, in additional to other artistic expressions, represent an important and bold attempt to safeguard the heritage of a way of life that is of global significance. The Maroon heritage of Moore Town is inscribed on the
UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Granny Nanny Cultural Group was at ICS on Wednesday 17 August, from 9 – 11AM to perform, conduct a workshop, and share information with students and parents about their history, culture and the natural environment where they live – the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Blue & John Crow Mountains National Park in Jamaica. The students had a rich and fun learning experience.
