ICS is one of DeKalb's first International Baccalaureate Schools. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) enables students to employ an investigative approach to learning English, math, science and social studies. It emphasizes cross-disciplinary thinking, problem solving and personal wellness. The program aims to develop inquiring knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better, more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Because of its diverse population, ICS doesn't just talk about intercultural understanding; they live it.
ICS is much more than the "Three R's." Unlike many other public schools, the curriculum includes art, music, drama and physical education — at least four times a week. It also includes daily classes in French or Spanish for English-proficient students.
The strength of ICS lies in its focus on educating the whole child, seeking to develop the innate curiosity of students while celebrating cultural differences in a challenging, nurturing and intentionally multi-ethnic environment.
